This week in class, we discussed the topic of introducing and using coding with young students in an educational setting. I actually had no previous knowledge of coding whatsoever, so this week’s material was very informative for me. It served as an introduction to coding in general, and also how it can be used in a classroom. We were given the opportunity, in breakout rooms, to check out different resources and sites that students would typically use in school to help them learn about coding and practice coding at a basic level. I had the opportunity to explore the site “Hour of Code,” which served as a hub for multiple different websites and coding platform, as well as workshops for children who want to learn more about coding. Each workshop was approximately 1 hour long, hence the name, and the workshops consisted of many different subject areas. I think it was really great that we were given class time to explore these resources, as it helped me gain a better understanding of coding, as well as how coding might look for elementary-aged children.
